My Diary
01/18/04
That's it. More lies and BS from the weather channel, I thought. The forecast was, 25 to 30 mile an hour winds, enough rain to force Noah to build an arc and temperatures in the low 40s. that was supposed to arrive during the night. Here I was, It's six am and not a breath of wind. Just to confirm I was not still dreaming I jumped on line and checked the forecast again. It looked to me like a weak front had gone through during the night and the bad boy had gone north of us. Finally dawn cracked as I headed East to PINS. sun burning my eye balls out, the Pomp's love the sunshine.
Me thinking its going to be a good day, wanted to share this and phoned Billy Sandifer. We jointly cursed the forecast and he informed me he was hitting the bays with his mate Tom to check the boat out and fish.
As I hit the last of the black top I could see the water was a little sandy but the driving looked great, I observed, little weed, few birds and a man, walking with a cart, heading south. I slowed to shout good morning to a few of my fishing buddies as I shot through the high banks in two wheel drive.
The wind was starting to build and now had swung to the North West. The top of the waves were lifting and rainbows were forming in the spray that was being blown from the tops of the waves.
Going around the elbow of the beach, the wind was now blowing cross off. Gusting 30.
Spotting a nice pinch in the second gut, below the 30 mile marker, I thought it was a good time to try for some Pomp. No sooner had the bait hit (Green Fishbites toped with shrimp.) the water and we had one on. Casting the second rod, the same thing happened. This went on for about 6 fish then stopped, it did not slow it stopped.
Moving south I started looking hard for the signs. I pulled up at a suck out for the wade gut with some turns working some small bait that I could not see. Again two pomp's and David who was now fishing north of me landed this nice 29 1/2 inch Red which was released OK.
David Walker CC TX with a 29 half inch red caught on a Fishbite.
As David had caught a Red I decided to sling some chunk bait using the new boxer rig. The Boxer is a double dropper rig that will put a good bit of sent were you need it, it does cast well. It will cast both baits clipped 99% of the casts, the 1% of the casts did come off at the start. The name Boxer is because it is designed to put the fish in the Box. This could be stopped by increasing the tension on the Davis Crimps.
For those that like building rigs here is the PDF.
Brenda (Surfgirl) proves the effectiveness of the Boxer rig with this 40 inch 21
lb Red. Again released.
Now for the man with the Cart. I was driving off the beach, my ice chest full
with Pomp and large Whiting. I was at the 25 mile marker and the man with the
cart was heading south steadily. I decided to stop and inform him that he would
have to walk off the beach back again because of the Mansfield Cut.
His name is John Dunham. He was aware of the Mansfield cut and his plan is to build a raft and swim it across. Now the water temp is down to the 50s, After talking to him for a while, he informed me that he has done quite a bit of walking and this was his way of getting to know himself. One of his treks was the Pacific Crest Trail. I asked him what his destination was going to be, he said "south Mexico". Now that's cool.
He was a really nice person to talk to, polite and interesting. I asked him if he wanted a fish. He said yes and was on his way. As he left me he said "god bless you". You know, I felt he really meant it.
Well the day was not that bad after all. Plenty of fish and interesting people.
Billy phoned me latter and told me the only way he had kept warm on the water was by cursing me. Maybe we should trust the weather forecast a bit better in the future.
Billy, God bless. :-)
