This week has been a bit fickle. The weather forecast people have again proven them selves to be dealing with a product that after all these years and money they put into it, have no idea what is going to happen. We have had a full moon that has made the fishing very unpredictable. The bait has been moving in pods up and down the beach and the best bite has been at night, on PINS over the course of the week. Water temp is in the high 60s. On Tuesday morning I dragged my head off the pillow at 2am to go and see the meteor shower, predicted by the weather man to be the best in 100 yrs. The truth was, last years was better. Being on the beach that early has got a lot going for it. The sunrises have been awesome all week and I was able to catch a few for the table, mainly Reds and one Trout. The fish that I have caught is when I find the bait.

This morning I decided to go and fish at Fish Pass with a chap called Spooner. Spooner is the president of Spooner Lure Co. based in Missouri his products are the Outcast spoon and Fat Mama, spoons both will cast a country mile and come in several different colors.

The Fat Mama weighs in at 2oz

The outcast comes in 2 weights 3oz and 2oz.

Arriving at Fish Pass at about 7am I made my way along the jetty.  Spooner already had one Spanish and a good size Jack. He told me to just wait and they would come by. We stood talking and watching the Dolphins that were putting on a fine show, jumping and spinning cart wheels. After about 40 mins an oil slick drifted past the end of the jetty.  At the same time the pony mullet were thick, previously I had only seen the rain minnow. Woosh, Mr Jack screamed in between Jetties blasting into the mullet. Spooner was quick and placed his outcast lure in the area. Tip down and using a counted retrieve ( three quick turns then stop and then two quick turns. ) he was into them. I had it all wrong and was trying to pop the lure like you would a worm. After he had two more Jacks on the next two casts, I turned and ask him what I was doing wrong, "I was getting a good thrashing". He showed me how to do it with the rod tip down and the counted retrieve. I got one, well I had him on for a few minutes until my shock leader parted from my running line. (should have checked it as I have been using it all week.)

Mr Jack with the Outcast lure. We were fishing in about 10 ft of water and as the spoon hit the water Spooner would give it 5 seconds before he would start his retrieve. He told me this would keep the lure at the same depth with his 11ft rod tip down. It would bring the lure to the surface with the tip up.

Another Jack falls to the deadly Outcast. These lures are all hand made by Spooner and have great action.

I think these lures will work on any aggressive fish and give great distance. Spooner this week has caught the following fish on them. Reds, Trout, Blues, Spanish and Mr Jack. After the lesson Spooner taught me this morning, YES, we have got them in stock in the shop if any of you would like to get some. 361 949 8083
